Learning Pathways
Structured learning journeys to build your expertise step by step
Fundamentals of Artificial Intelligence
This learning pathway is designed to take learners from a foundational understanding of artificial intelligence through to practical application, risk awareness, and governance. It equips professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to not only understand how AI systems work, but to use, assess, and oversee them responsibly in real-world environments. The journey begins with the fundamentals, covering how AI models learn, the role of data, and core concepts such as neural networks, Natural Language Processing (NLP), Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and computer vision. Learners gain a clear, practical understanding of how modern AI systems — including Large Language Models — operate behind the scenes, without requiring technical or coding expertise. Building on this foundation, the pathway explores how AI is applied in practice. This includes topics such as prompt engineering, generative AI, and emerging approaches like agentic AI, where systems can act autonomously to complete tasks. Learners are introduced to how AI is used across industries, including compliance, operations, and decision-making environments. A critical component of the pathway focuses on understanding where AI can fail. Learners explore key risks such as bias, hallucination, overfitting and underfitting, data quality issues, and model drift. This ensures that they are able to identify limitations and assess the reliability of AI systems in practice. The pathway then transitions into governance and control. Learners are introduced to the AI lifecycle, model monitoring, documentation requirements, and key governance mechanisms such as human-in-the-loop oversight and kill switches. They also explore global frameworks and regulatory developments, including the EU AI Act, NIST AI Risk Management Framework, ISO standards, and data protection requirements under GDPR. By the end of the pathway, learners will be able to confidently engage with AI systems, understand their capabilities and limitations, and apply governance principles to ensure responsible and compliant use. This pathway is designed for professionals who need to move beyond basic AI awareness and develop real capability in managing AI within their organisations.
